In the late 1970s my wife and I toured England, Scotland, and Wales, staying in bed and breakfasts. Our routine would be to drive into a small or mid-sized city at around 3 or 4 p.m., find the tourist office, consult their list of possible bnbs and start phoning. We invariably would find nearby a wonderful bed and breakfast for that night and maybe two or three more nights in an owner-managed and -occupied house.
